Ragamuffin

The RagaMuffin came from a split among Ragdoll breeders in 1994, when a group breaking away from the tightly controlled Ragdoll registry outcrossed to Persians, Himalayans and domestic longhairs and established a separate breed.

The result is a Ragdoll-like cat in a much wider range of colours and patterns.

It weighs 4.5 to 9 kilograms, with males considerably larger, and takes four years to reach full size. The coat is dense, silky and rabbit-like, and the temperament is the point of the breed: RagaMuffins are exceptionally docile, tolerant of handling, and often go limp when picked up. That placidity is charming and also a reason to keep them indoors.

Living with a ragamuffin

Ask for cardiac screening and the PKD DNA test. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy occurs in Ragdoll-related lines and needs an echocardiogram; polycystic kidney disease came in through the Persian outcrossing and is definitively testable.

Keep them indoors or in a secure catio. A cat this docile and trusting has no defensive instinct worth the name and is at real risk outdoors.

The dense coat needs brushing several times a week, and it mats behind the ears and in the armpits.

Feed as a growing cat for longer than usual given the slow maturity, then watch the weight — they are big and sedentary and gain easily.

They are people-oriented and follow their owners about, and they do not do well ignored.

General guidance, not veterinary advice. Individual cats vary, and anything about a specific animal is a question for a vet who has seen it.
