Munchkin

The Munchkin is defined by short legs, caused by a dominant mutation producing a form of achondroplasia — the long bones of the limbs are shortened while the body and head are normal size.

Short-legged cats have been recorded since the 1940s, but the breed was established in Louisiana in the 1980s and recognised by TICA in 1995 over substantial objection.

It weighs 2.5 to 4 kilograms, comes in any coat and colour, and is generally described as playful, sociable and unbothered by its build — Munchkins run and climb, if less athletically than other cats. It is also the foundation of every other short-legged cat breed, and the source of a continuing argument in the cat fancy about breeding for a skeletal defect.

Living with a munchkin

The gene is lethal in the homozygous form, so two Munchkins are never bred together — kittens inheriting two copies die before birth. Every Munchkin has one short-legged and one normal-legged parent.

Lordosis, an excessive inward curve of the spine that compresses the chest, and pectus excavatum, a sunken breastbone, both occur in the breed and can be serious in kittens. Ask breeders directly and have any kitten checked.

Whether the short legs themselves cause arthritis is genuinely contested — the evidence is thinner than either side claims. What is not contested is that they cannot jump as high, so litter trays, food and resting places should be reachable without a leap, and high perches need steps.

Keep them lean. Extra weight on a short-limbed frame is worse than on a normal one.
