California spangled
The California Spangled was created in the 1980s by Hollywood screenwriter Paul Casey, who wanted a domestic cat resembling a spotted wild cat in order to draw public attention to the poaching of leopards and ocelots.
It was built from domestic breeds — Abyssinian, British Shorthair, Siamese and street cats from Egypt and Asia — with no wild ancestry at all.
It weighed 4 to 7 kilograms, was long and muscular with a low, prowling gait and a boldly spotted coat. It became briefly famous in 1986 when it was offered in the Neiman Marcus Christmas catalogue, a marketing decision that drew heavy criticism for treating cats as luxury goods. Interest faded, breeding largely ceased, and the breed is now effectively extinct.

Living with a california spangled
Almost certainly no longer available. Breeding essentially stopped after its founder's death and the breed is considered extinct or nearly so, so a cat advertised as a California Spangled today is far more likely to be a Bengal, an Ocicat or a spotted domestic cat. Ask for verifiable registration papers and expect not to get them.
If a genuine one exists, it is a domestic cat and needs nothing exotic — no licence, no special diet.
The breed's history is worth knowing on its own terms: it is the clearest case of a cat created as a message, sold as a luxury item, and abandoned when fashion moved on.
For the look without the ghost, an Ocicat or a Bengal is the living equivalent, and both have active breeders and health testing behind them.
