Abyssinian guinea pig
The Abyssinian is one of the oldest guinea pig varieties, distinguished by rosettes — whorls of hair radiating from a central point — set in a symmetrical pattern over the body.
A good show Abyssinian has eight or ten well-defined rosettes and a pronounced ridge along the back where they meet.
Despite the name it has no particular connection to Abyssinia. The coat is short but wiry and stands up, giving a permanently rumpled look. Abyssinians have a reputation among keepers for being livelier and more mischievous than the smooth-coated varieties, though individual temperament varies more than variety.

Living with a abyssinian guinea pig
The rosetted coat traps debris where the whorls meet, so brush weekly and check the ridges for bedding, food and matting.
All the species essentials apply and matter more than the coat. Daily vitamin C, since guinea pigs cannot produce it. Unlimited hay for teeth and gut. Company always — two sows or a sow and a neutered boar; never a lone pig.
Provide real floor space rather than a tall cage.
Watch for bladder stones, which are common in the species, ear and skin mites, and sore hocks on wire flooring. A guinea pig that stops eating needs a vet that day.
General guidance, not veterinary advice. Individual critters vary, and anything about a specific animal is a question for a vet who has seen it.
