Albino ferret

The albino is a colour rather than a breed: a domestic ferret with no melanin, giving a white or cream coat and pink or ruby eyes.

Albinos were historically favoured for working rabbits, because a white ferret is far easier to see and recover in undergrowth.

In every other respect it is a standard domestic ferret, with the same needs, the same lifespan and the same temperament. The one meaningful difference is sensitivity to bright light: albino eyes lack pigment and albinos have poorer vision than coloured ferrets, which is worth accommodating rather than worrying about.

Living with a albino ferret

Provide shaded, dim areas and avoid bright direct light; albino eyes are light-sensitive and eyesight is weaker than in coloured ferrets. They compensate with scent and hearing and manage perfectly well.

The white coat yellows with age and with oil from the skin. Bathe rarely — over-bathing strips oils and makes a ferret smell more, not less.

Everything else is standard ferret care and matters far more: a high-meat diet with no grain or sugar, several hours of supervised out-of-cage time in a ferret-proofed room, distemper vaccination, and awareness of adrenal disease and insulinoma from middle age.
