Algerian hedgehog

The Algerian hedgehog, Atelerix algirus, is a distinct species from north Africa and southern Europe, and one of the two species behind the captive African pygmy hedgehog kept as a pet.

Pure Algerians are uncommon in the pet trade; most animals sold are the hybrid.

It is slightly larger and longer-legged than the four-toed hedgehog, with a less pronounced spineless parting on the crown. In the wild it is found across the Maghreb and in parts of Spain and France, where it is thought to have been introduced. Care in captivity is the same as for the pygmy hedgehog in every practical respect.

Living with a algerian hedgehog

Check the legal position carefully. Atelerix algirus is a protected species in parts of its European range, and hedgehog keeping is prohibited outright in several US states.

Husbandry matches the pygmy hedgehog. Hold a stable 22–25°C, because attempted hibernation below about 18–20°C is dangerous and often fatal in captivity.

Provide a large solid-surface wheel; these are animals that cover several kilometres a night and get fat without one.

House alone — they are solitary and adults fight.

Watch for wobbly hedgehog syndrome, mites and obesity, and find an exotics vet before you need one.
