Goldendoodle

The Goldendoodle crosses a Golden Retriever with a Poodle.

It is a crossbreed rather than a breed, and it is among the most popular crosses in the English-speaking world, produced in standard, medium and miniature sizes depending on the Poodle used.

It stands 33 to 66 centimetres and weighs 7 to 45 kilograms, living ten to fifteen years. Coats range from tight curls through loose waves to nearly straight, and only the curlier coats shed minimally — no puppy can be promised as non-shedding or hypoallergenic. Temperament is generally friendly, energetic and biddable, drawing on two intelligent working breeds, and the grooming cost is the thing buyers most often underestimate.

Living with a goldendoodle

The coat is the underestimated cost. A curly or wavy doodle coat needs professional grooming every six to eight weeks — often over a hundred pounds a visit — plus brushing to the skin several times a week. Neglected coats mat solid and are shaved off under sedation, which is a welfare issue rather than an inconvenience.

No puppy can be promised hypoallergenic. Coat type varies within a litter, and allergens come from dander and saliva as well as hair.

Ask for hip and elbow scores, eye testing and PRA on both parents, and about cancer in the Golden lines.

They are energetic and need an hour or more daily plus training.

Ears are pendulous and hairy; clean weekly.

General guidance, not veterinary advice. Individual dogs vary, and anything about a specific animal is a question for a vet who has seen it.
