German pinscher
The German Pinscher is the older breed behind both the Dobermann and the Miniature Pinscher, a German farm dog used for killing vermin and guarding property.
It came close to extinction after the Second World War and was rebuilt in the 1950s largely by one breeder, Werner Jung, who used four oversized Miniature Pinschers and a smuggled bitch.
It stands 43 to 51 centimetres, weighs 11 to 20 kilograms and lives twelve to fourteen years, with a short glossy coat. It is high-energy, intelligent, confident and strongly independent — a genuine working terrier-type temperament in a medium dog, requiring an owner who will train consistently rather than assume good nature.

Living with a german pinscher
Ask for the von Willebrand disease DNA test. It is a clotting disorder and the result matters enormously before any surgery — a dog can appear entirely normal until it bleeds.
They are strong-willed and highly intelligent, and they will test boundaries. Consistent reward-based training from puppyhood is necessary, not optional.
The prey drive is high, and they are alert and will bark at everything.
The gene pool is narrow after the post-war reconstruction from very few dogs. Ask what a breeder does about it.
They need real daily exercise and mental work. The short coat needs a weekly rub over and nothing more.
