Australian kelpie

The Kelpie is Australia's working sheepdog, developed in the 1870s from Scottish collie imports and named for a dog called Kelpie in the breed's foundation.

It is still primarily a working animal: a good Kelpie will move sheep all day in heat that would stop most breeds, and some run over sixty kilometres in a working day.

It stands 43 to 51 centimetres and weighs 14 to 20 kilograms, with a short weather-resistant double coat, and lives twelve to fifteen years. It is intensely intelligent and famously indefatigable. Working and show lines have diverged, and a working-bred Kelpie in a suburban home is one of the clearest mismatches in dogs.

Living with a australian kelpie

Ask whether the dog is working-bred or show-bred, and take the answer seriously. A working Kelpie has a drive that does not switch off, and in a house without stock or sport it becomes anxious, destructive and often obsessive — spinning, shadow-chasing, fence-running.

They need hours of real work daily. Herding, agility, canicross and scent work all substitute; a long walk does not.

Ask for the cerebellar abiotrophy DNA test — affected pups develop progressive incoordination and do not recover — and for PRA testing.

They are heat-tolerant and hardy, but they need shade and water like any dog.

The coat is easy: a weekly brush, more during the moult. Grooming is the least of the commitment.
