Horgi

The Horgi crosses a Siberian Husky with a Welsh Corgi.

It is a crossbreed rather than a breed, and it is bred for the appearance: a husky's markings and often its blue eyes on a corgi's short-legged body.

It stands 33 to 38 centimetres, weighs 9 to 23 kilograms and lives twelve to fifteen years, with a thick double coat that sheds enormously. The combination is worth thinking about honestly, because it pairs two things that do not obviously go together: the corgi's dwarfism, which produces a long back on short legs, and the husky's stamina and drive, which is built for running considerable distances.

Living with a horgi

Protect the back. The corgi's short legs come from achondroplasia, and the resulting long spine is prone to disc disease — discourage jumping on and off furniture, use ramps, and above all keep the dog lean.

The husky side brings real energy and stamina, and satisfying it without over-stressing a long back takes some thought: steady walking and swimming suit better than repeated jumping or hard turns.

Huskies are escape artists with high prey drive; recall is often unreliable and fencing needs to be secure.

The double coat moults spectacularly twice a year. Brush weekly and daily through it, and never shave it.

Ask for hip scores and eye testing on both parents.
