Frenchton

The Frenchton crosses a French Bulldog with a Boston Terrier.

It is a crossbreed rather than a breed, and it is frequently marketed as a healthier French Bulldog — a claim that does not survive examination, because both parent breeds are brachycephalic and the cross has two flat-faced parents rather than one.

It stands 28 to 40 centimetres, weighs 7 to 11 kilograms and lives eleven to fourteen years, with a short smooth coat. The temperament is generally cheerful, affectionate and companionable, which is the genuine appeal. The airway, spine and eyes carry the same risks as both parents, and buyers should judge the individual dog's breathing rather than the marketing.

Living with a frenchton

Both parents are flat-faced, so the cross is not a fix. Listen to the dog breathe at rest: snoring, snorting, or noisy breathing means brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome, and it is common in this cross. Corrective surgery makes a large difference to dogs that need it.

They overheat fast and dangerously. No exercise in heat, never in a car, harness rather than collar, and be aware that many cannot swim.

Hemivertebrae — malformed spinal bones — occur in both parent breeds and can cause hind-limb weakness. Ask.

Prominent eyes injure easily; squinting is urgent.

Many litters need caesarean delivery, which is worth knowing about the breeding of these dogs generally.
