Boerboel

The Boerboel is a South African mastiff, developed by settler farmers from imported European mastiff and bulldog types crossed with local dogs, to guard remote homesteads against people and predators.

The name means farmer's dog.

It stands 59 to 70 centimetres and weighs 68 to 91 kilograms, with a short dense coat, and lives nine to eleven years. It is a serious guardian breed — territorial, confident and physically enormous — and it is banned in Denmark and restricted or subject to insurance and licensing requirements in a number of other countries. That legal position, and the handling experience the dog demands, are the first things to establish before considering one.

Living with a boerboel

Check the law where you live, and check your insurance. Boerboels appear on restricted or prohibited lists in several countries, and a dog acquired without checking may have to be rehomed or worse.

This is not a first dog, a family-friendly giant, or a breed that tolerates inconsistent handling. It needs an owner who understands guardian breeds, structured training from puppyhood, and continuous socialisation.

Secure fencing is essential. A territorial dog of ninety kilograms that leaves the property is a serious matter.

Ask for hip and elbow scores, and for eye checks — entropion and ectropion are common and often need surgery.

Grow them slowly. Overfeeding a giant-breed puppy causes joint disease that lasts a lifetime.

Bloat is a serious risk at this size and chest shape. Gastric dilatation-volvulus kills within hours, so unproductive retching, a distended abdomen and pacing mean an emergency vet immediately.
