Cavachon

The Cavachon crosses a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel with a Bichon Frise.

It is a crossbreed rather than a breed, popular as a small family companion, and it typically inherits a soft wavy coat and an affectionate, sociable temperament from both sides.

It stands 30 to 33 centimetres, weighs 5 to 9 kilograms and lives twelve to fifteen years. Both parent breeds were bred as companions, so the temperament is consistently people-oriented and gentle, which is the cross's genuine strength. The health picture is dominated by the Cavalier contribution, and the same two conditions apply here as in any Cavalier cross.

Living with a cavachon

Ask what heart and MRI screening the Cavalier parent had. Mitral valve disease and syringomyelia are both common in Cavaliers and both are serious; a Bichon on the other side does not cancel them out.

A murmur in a young dog, or neck-scratching and yelping when handled, needs veterinary attention rather than watching.

The Bichon side brings a coat that mats readily. Professional grooming every six to eight weeks plus brushing several times a week.

Both parent breeds are prone to separation anxiety, having been bred purely for company. Build alone-time gradually from puppyhood.

Dental disease is common in small dogs; brush from the start. Ask about patellar luxation.
