Canaan dog

The Canaan Dog is Israel's national breed, developed from the free-living pariah dogs of the Negev desert from the 1930s by Rudolphina Menzel, who was asked to create a working dog for the region.

Those pariah dogs descend from an ancient Middle Eastern population, making this one of the more primitive breeds still kept.

It stands 48 to 61 centimetres, weighs 16 to 25 kilograms and lives twelve to fifteen years, with a harsh double coat. It is a genuinely healthy breed — natural selection in the desert did the work that health testing does elsewhere — and it is alert, territorial, vocal and reserved with strangers in the way of a survival-shaped animal rather than a bred-for guardian.

Living with a canaan dog

Socialise from the earliest weeks. The natural wariness is deep and becomes fearfulness or reactivity without broad, positive early exposure — this is the single most important thing with a primitive breed.

They are vocal and territorial and will announce everything. Training a quiet cue early helps; nothing removes the instinct.

They are independent and learn quickly but ask why before complying. Reward-based training works; drilling does not.

Health is genuinely good, with a broad natural gene pool and few inherited conditions — one of the soundest purebreds available. Ask for hip scores anyway.

The double coat needs a weekly brush and daily attention during the heavy moult.
