Braque Francais Pyrenean

The Braque Français Pyrénéen is the smaller of the two French Braque varieties, from the Pyrenees, and is among the oldest pointing breeds in Europe — probably ancestral to several other continental pointers and to some British gundogs.

It stands 47 to 58 centimetres, weighs 17 to 25 kilograms and lives twelve to fourteen years, with a short coat in white and chestnut. It is a versatile hunting dog that points, tracks and retrieves, working at a moderate pace and close to the gun. Temperament is the breed's strong suit: gentle, biddable and notably good-natured, which makes it one of the easier versatile gundogs to live with.

Living with a braque francais pyrenean

They are soft dogs. Harsh training methods work badly and the breed is known for shutting down under pressure — reward-based training and patience produce a far better gundog.

They need an hour or more of real exercise daily and do best with work that uses the nose.

They are affectionate and family-oriented and do not do well kennelled or left alone.

The short coat needs a weekly brush. Check the pendulous ears weekly.

Health is generally good for a purebred. Ask for hip scores and eye testing.
