Alapaha blue blood bulldog
The Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldog is an American bulldog type from the Alapaha river region of southern Georgia, developed as a plantation and farm guardian and credited to the Lane family, who bred them for generations.
It is not recognised by the major kennel clubs and remains rare.
It stands 46 to 61 centimetres, weighs 25 to 45 kilograms and lives twelve to thirteen years, with a short coat often merle or heavily marked with white. It is a guardian: loyal to its household, territorial, and naturally suspicious of strangers. Unlike the English Bulldog it retains an athletic build and a functional muzzle, which is a meaningful health advantage.

Living with a alapaha blue blood bulldog
Ask about the parents' colours. Merle bred to merle produces double merle puppies that are commonly deaf or blind, and heavy white marking raises deafness risk independently. A BAER hearing test on the puppy settles it.
This is a guardian breed and needs early, sustained socialisation and an owner comfortable directing a strong, confident dog. Secure fencing is essential.
Check insurance and local rules — bulldog-type dogs are affected by breed-specific legislation in some places.
Entropion, where the eyelid rolls inward, is common and needs surgical correction.
The coat is easy. The rest of the commitment is training, structure and containment.
General guidance, not veterinary advice. Individual dogs vary, and anything about a specific animal is a question for a vet who has seen it.
